  • People Who Have Helped and Guided Us
  • All work on and initiatives under The Commons until now has been undertaken and financed by the founding group and its principals. We have no great regrets about this since we have in this way been able to get much of the job done as we had intended. However, it is indeed our hope to find people and groups eventually who will wish to come in, work with, and support all this activity in various ways. If there is only one partner working away, it is hardly a Commons! On the other hand, if you go to some of the programs that you can see to your left, you will indeed note that hundreds of people and groups have joined in many of them in useful and creative ways. At the same time, however, we need to do a better job with organizing and delivering this front end portal. And that is where you may come in.

You may be surprised to learn that, despite all this good help, we are nonetheless more or less continuously on the lookout for partners, contributors and sponsors, if not in support of our own work than that of others who are attempting to push out in these same general directions. In a phrase: "... toward sustainability". And there is an awful lot that remains to do before we get there.

    Cooperating Groups & Institutions

Below you have a first listing of the people and institutions who have over these last years provided many kinds of support for the continuing cooperative effort that is The Commons. Despite its present rudimentary presentation and omissions, it should serve to give you at least a first idea of how all of this is unfolding and some of those to whom we owe so much. That said, we must also note that their appearance on this list in no way is meant to implicate them in our program or objectives, despite the fact that we may have cooperated on one or more occasions. (You will note that we have provided Web links in most cases, and we think you will find it fascinating to have a look and note their great diversity and quality. We have been extremely fortunate to have the benefit of their ideas, collaboration and support.)

You will note that the above listing does not include any private sector groups. This omission is neither an accident nor should it be taken to imply that we do not work closely with the private sector in almost all of our programs. Most of these relationships are, in contrast to the above, carried out either on a fee paying basis or as a friendly exchange of ideas and information to our mutual benefit.

People who have helped and guided us

This would have to be a very long list indeed -- far too long really to make sense in the present context. On the other hand, if you take the time to go to the various programs and sites, you will quickly become aware of many of the names of those who are pitching in to make all this work. Or alternatively, if you have a specific person in mind, you can find out if and perhaps even how they have been active in the various programs via the Search engines (placing in the full name with quotes to concentrate your search). Another good source are the Partner lists for the various programs which contain more than a thousand names of people who are helping advance them.

Finally, as an excellent example of how this continuing attempt at international networking can function in the interest of sustainability, we would direct you to the International Guest Book that was created in support of the first Car Free Day that was organized by The Commons in support of the City of Bogota, Colombia, in February 2000. The more than one hundred esteemed and well known colleagues from institutions around the world who agreed to sign in and thereby to give their support of this notable environmental initiative will give you a rather striking idea of how this can be made to work. (This was, in fact, one of the reasons why The Commons and the City of Bogotá were nominated for the prestigious 2000 Stockholm Prize for the Environment.)
